Ruptured Gas Line

If a gas line is ruptured while performing ground disturbance:

  • Immediately shutoff all motorized equipment and or vehicles
  • Evacuate UP WIND to a safe distance
  • Call 780-846-2929 as soon as possible
  • DO NOT attempt to stop the leak; you may be putting yourself and others in danger. Static electricity could be an ignition point.

Gas Odor

If you smell a gas odor in your house or any building with power service:

  • Evacuate the building immediately and do not operate any light switches, appliances, land line phones, cell phones, and battery operated flashlights, anything that may cause an ignition point.
  • Call 780-846-2929 as soon as possible from a safe location away from the building or from a neighbor’s residence.

Physical Properties of Natural Gas:

Chemical FormulaCH4
ColorlessInvisible
TastelessCannot be detected throught the sense of taste
OderlessNatural gas is odorless in it's natural state; an odorant called mercaptan is added to the gas allowing for detection through smell
Non-IrritatingDoes not irritate the eyes or nose
Lighter Than AirNatural Gas Density = 0.60 (Air = 1.0)
Flammable & ExplosiveThe explosive concentration range is 5% to 15% gas to air.
Iginition Temperature649°C or 1,200°F
ToxicCan cause death if large amounts are absorbed (poisonous)

Carbon Monoxide

If you suspect Carbon Monoxide in your house or any heated building:

  • Open windows
  • Evacuate building
  • Call 780-846-2929 as soon as possible from a safe location away from the building or from a neighbor’s residence

Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning:

Early Symptoms:

  • “Flu-like” symptoms
  • “Tightness” across the forehead
  • Headache, throbbing at the temples
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Partial loss of muscular control
  • Increased pulse and respiration
  • Confusion

Prolonged Exposure:

  • Disorientation
  • Inability to move due to muscle weakness

Final Stages:

  • Falling blood pressure (loss of body colour)
  • Loss of muscular control
  • Dulled reflexes
  • Intermittent convulsions
  • Shallow breathing until respiration ceases
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Death
